Actually, the shaded area is NOT the actual area of TS winds. It only serves to delineate the quadrants (NW/SW/SE/NE) and the maximum extent of TS winds (that is, the shaded region is where TS winds are possible). Generally, winds could vary greatly inside the region. If only the area experiencing TS winds were highlighted, it would consist of a much smaller main region lying some 60 miles north of the center, with a few disconnected pieces further away from center.
